Pipe Clamps, Screw Clamps and One-Handed Clamps: How I Use Them

The clamp I choose depends on the task. In my workshop I use pipe clamps for gluing larger cabinets, screw clamps for solid-wood frames and one-handed clamps especially when I work without assistance. This article describes my own working practice.

Pipe clamps: for larger cabinets

I reach for pipe clamps when gluing larger cabinets. These jobs require a clamping capacity that matches the dimensions of the workpiece, which is why long pipe clamps are part of my workshop equipment.

A dry run before applying glue is worthwhile: can every clamp be positioned, are the joints accessible, and can the alignment still be checked before the glue makes the process more difficult?

Screw clamps: for solid-wood frames

I use screw clamps for solid-wood frames, including door and window frames. The clamping capacity and throat depth must suit each position, and the clamps must not obstruct one another when fitted.

Check the alignment while clamping a frame. More pressure alone will not correct a poorly fitting joint. Suitable protective pads can help prevent marks on sensitive surfaces.

One-handed clamps: useful when working alone

I find one-handed clamps particularly useful when no helper is available. One hand can hold or align a component while the other operates the clamp.

One-handed operation is an advantage during positioning. Whether a particular clamp can also provide enough force for the subsequent clamping operation depends on the model and the task.

My preferred brand

BESSEY is my preferred clamp brand, and I also buy its products through Amazon.de. This preference is based on my personal use; the article is not a comparative product test.

Let the task determine the choice

I typically use pipe clamps for larger cabinets, screw clamps for solid-wood frames and one-handed clamps when working alone. These are common applications rather than exclusive rules. Before each job, I check the clamping capacity, throat depth and handling that are actually required.

I show how I store my clamps on the wall in How to Store Clamps: My Space-Saving Workshop Solution.
